Checkpoints Ireland: Gardai catch driver with no reason to be on the road before seizing car

Gardai continue to ramp up roads policing across the country with various checkpoints and patrols in place.

While the pandemic saw an unprecedented Garda presence on Irish roads Covid checkpoints are now a thing of the past.

However while restrictions have been eased Gardai are still keeping vigilant to ensure road safety laws are being followed.

And this week was no exception after officers caught a driver who had no business being on the road as they had never held a valid driving license.

Gardai stopped the motorist on the N7 when they made the discovery.

Taking to social media a spokesperson said: "Gardai from DMR South Roads Policing Unit stopped this car on the N7 on Sunday afternoon Driver was found to have never held a driving licence and therefore was driving uninsured! Vehicle detained.

It comes following a spate of serious crashes on Irish roads over the past week.

Last week three men were killed following a serious crash on the N7 when their car collided with a truck.

Dean Maguire perished in a burning car alongside his associates Graham Taylor and Carl Freeman on Wednesday night.

The men had fled from gardai before driving down the N7 on the wrong side of the road before smashing into a truck head-on.

Meanwhile teenager, two young men and a young woman were rushed to hospital after a horror car crash in Co Limerick on Saturday.

Investigations are also still underway following a hit and run which left a bride-to-be dead in Co. Donegal over the weekend.
