Checkout rage at Asda witnessed by appalled shopper

A shopper at Asda highlighted an appalling incident of "checkout rage" at the supermarket.

The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, said she witnessed the incident at the Bootle superstore in Strand Road on Friday afternoon.

She said it all sprang from the female Asda worker trying to be helpful as the checkouts were getting busier.

The shopper added: "I'd been talking to her at the till about anxiety and saying she looked stressed, because it was so busy and everyone was moaning there was not enough tills open.

"I was last in line as she had only taken over to cover the rest of the line while another girl's shift had finished.

"So the 'till closed' sign was up behind me, until she was nearly done serving me she went on the headset and said it's too busy I should really stay open to help.

"The sign was removed and that's when these two girls came storming over shouting at her, jumped in front of everyone in the queue that had just formed shouting you told us you was closed, now you're open we’ve got a baby with us.

"She was so apologetic to them but they wouldn’t listen. I could see she was uneasy and really flustered so that's when I said eh leave her alone she's doing her job. She was closed but decided to stay on and help as it's busy.

"It's disgusting how some people are the way they talk to people who are just doing their job."

The shopper also claimed the two young women who abused the checkout assistant were not wearing face coverings.

She added: "I felt so sorry for her I went back on Saturday and left her a card and some positivity stuff."

A spokesperson for Asda said: "‘We do not tolerate any form of abuse towards our colleagues and following this incident on Friday the customers involved have been banned from this store."
