The Beast unleashed “The Beast” as Dane Brugler of The Athletic not only released his draft guide but also came out with a full seven-round mock with the 2023 NFL Draft just days away.
Here, we’ll take a look at his picks for the Jets which include building through the trenches early and double-dipping on the offensive line.
No. 13 - Paris Johnson Jr., OT, Ohio State
Everyone under the sun knows the Jets need help at offensive tackle and if one of the top three are available at No. 13 for the Jets, they’re almost certainly going to be the pick.
However, in this mock, the Jets almost get their dream scenario. All three of Johnson, Peter Skoronski and Broderick Jones are on the board, so the Jets get their pick of the litter and take Johnson here.
“Mekhi Becton and Duane Brown are back in 2023 for the Jets, but both playing a full 17-game regular-season schedule seems unlikely. Johnson not only would provide immediate and playable depth at tackle, he also would give the franchise a long-term road map at the position.”
No. 42 - Joe Tippmann, C, Wisconsin
The Jets follow up their left tackle of the future with their center of the future. Tippmann could slide right in and play for the Jets or he can develop a bit if the team signs either Ben Jones or Connor McGovern. Either way, Tippmann would be a huge hit for the Jets in round two.
No. 43 - Keeanu Benton, DT, Wisconsin
Joe Douglas loves building through the trenches on both sides and that continues here on the other side after two offensive line selections. Benton can move along the line, giving the Jets some flexibility and some power next to Quinnen Williams. The Jets don’t have a ton of depth at defensive tackle heading into the draft, so an early defensive tackle is certainly a good possibility.
No. 112 - Nick Hampton, Edge, Appalachian State
Similar to Bryce Huff, Hampton can be a pass-rush specialist for the Jets and you can never have too many of those. Hampton is quick off the edge and has a knack for getting after the quarterback — 18 sacks over the last two seasons, 26.5 career sacks at App State.
No. 143 - Owen Pappoe, LB, Auburn
Pappoe has a lot of speed, as evidenced by his 4.39 40-yard dash and can rack up the tackles. He recorded 256 across 41 games at Auburn including 15 for a loss. Pappoe can also add value on special teams with said speed and tackling.
No. 207 - Xavier Gipson, WR, Stephen F. Austin
Gipson would give the Jets an option as a return specialist. He returned four punts for touchdowns while at Stephen F. Austin, including two last season. He was also very productive on offense. He had back-to-back seasons with at least 1,100 yards and averaged over 1,000 yards receiving for his career with 37 touchdown catches. He can compete for a role in the slot while returning punts.
