‘Check your bank account just to be safe’: Man orders $140 grill from Lowe’s. Then he gets sent $1,400 grill instead

One Lowe’s shopper lucked out when they ordered a $140 grill, only for the home improvement store to send them a $1,400 one instead. TikToker @mississippifatal shared his good fortune in a clip with more than 300,000 views as of writing.

The TikTok may have only been 8 seconds long, but that’s all the time @mississippifatal needed to show off his new smoker from Lowe’s. In the clip, he’s grilling some corn and several pieces of steak. The creator adds in the caption, “I told them that’s not mine. They said well you ordered it so ok yall know more than me!!”

Viewers warn him there might be a catch

Several users congratulated @mississippifatal on what they dubbed his blessing, but others advised him to make sure he wasn’t charged.

“Check your bank account just to be safe,” one user wrote. Another added, “Did you [peek] your bank acc to really make sure you’re good?” The creator replied that he made sure he “was in the clear.”

Others shared similar stories that had happened to them.

One comment read, “Ordered a cake topper from Amazon and got a nice set of wireless headphones.”

A second user wrote, “Had this happen, ordered $50 worth of floor tile they brung out a pallet of the best pergo flooring. Needless to say the house got a full makeover.”

Another viewer claimed the same thing as @mississippifatal happened to her.

“I got my husband a $600 blackstone,” she wrote. “He picked it up & they gave him one out of the garden center. They left the one in the box in pickup and refunded me my money cause somebody didn’t scan it. Been 2 years. What a blessing.”

When asked why he thinks Lowe’s didn’t make the change, @mississippifatal wrote, “I kept telling them it’s not mine. I guess it was less trouble for them getting in trouble for the mess up.”

If you receive a more valuable item, do you have to send it back?

As @mississippifatal didn’t want to take advantage of Lowe’s mistake, some consumers would be reluctant to call the company and let them know of their error. If you receive something more expensive than what you ordered, what are your rights as a consumer?

According to the forum Justia Ask a Lawyer, some experts weighed in.

Consumer law lawyer Maurice Mandel II wrote in 2020, “As a consumer, you are not obligated to pay for or return UNSOLICITED merchandise that is sent to you.”

He continued, “However, the item that was sent to you was not Unsolicited. You solicited merchandise but they sent you a different piece, in error. This is a different situation than unsolicited merchandise.”

Mandel II writes that the customer would be morally and legally obligated to either return the merchandise at the company’s cost, “or pay the difference for the improved merchandise.”

The Mary Sue reached out to the TikToker via TikTok message and to Lowe’s via email.
