Check out the new Leeds United mural to welcome fans walking to Elland Road

Leeds United supporters heading to Elland Road will notice a new addition to the matchday walk on their way to the Sheffield Wednesday game.

That's because award-winning Leeds-based artist Andy Sykes, known to many as Hexjibber, has created a colourful mural on the route taken by thousands of fans on their pilgrimage to the stadium.

Sykes, 36, was chosen by Leeds City Council to add his artwork to the outside of the tunnel that runs underneath Top Moor Side on the south west corner of Holbeck Moor.

The mural not only celebrates everything that's great about Leeds United, but also the surrounding areas, with a big focus on Holbeck in Bloom.

"The council put out a call for ideas online because they wanted to encourage people to walk from town to the match, so I submitted mine," Sykes told LeedsLive.

"I'm from Leeds. I know how important the area is to local people around there.

"I wanted to include the football fans, the Billy Bremner statue and the ground, but also the green spaces and the local people too. I wanted to represent the diversity of the local area."

The artwork was installed on Tuesday, April 2, and has added a bright and cheerful dimension to the previously drab concrete wall.

While there are some minor concerns it could fall foul to graffiti, Sykes hopes that the Leeds United element will deter anyone from defacing his artwork.

He said: "If there's Leeds United on there then hopefully people will be protective of it."

Bid to save home of former Leeds United stars reaches 1000 signatures as campaigners take next step
