Check out Ryan Mayse's comical attempt to airbrush his way to Ballymena's winner against Cliftonville

Ryan Mayse has come up with a cunning plan to claim Ballymena United’s crucial second goal in Saturday’s 2-1 comeback win over Cliftonville at the Showgrounds.

Well, we say cunning.. it remains to be seen whether the Sky Blues forward’s primitive photoshop skills helped pull the wool over anyone’s eyes but his own.

Mayse was frustrated that his close range header against Cliftonville - which ended up in the net via Reds defender Conor McDermott - was recorded as an own goal.

The 25-year-old was insistent his flashing effort from an Andy McGrory cross was goal bound when McDermott deflected it past Reds keeper Richard Brush.

So insistent in fact, the lively forward, who joined Ballymena from Dungannon Swifts last year, took to his Instagram account to set the record straight.

He claimed (presumably with a poker face) that he was delighted to “get back amongst the goals”.

Rather comically, he also offered “thanks to the BBC for clearing up any confusion as to who scored” in Saturday’s win at the Warden Street venue.

Judge for yourself… but we’re pretty sure Ryan may have doctored the report and replaced the words “Conor McDermott own goal” with “Ryan Mayse header” on the Beeb screenshot...

Former Dungannon and Ballinamallard United team mate Johnny Lafferty wasn’t having any of it and commented on Ryan’s Insta timeline: “Apologise for celebrating immediately!”

Mayse scored seven goals for the Braid club last season; his last coming as part of a quickfire double in a thumping 6-1 league win over Institute at the Showgrounds in March.

Saturday's 2-1 win over Cliftonville edged David Jeffrey's men up to fifth in the Danske Bank Premiership.
