Check if you can claim £25 a week towards your heating bills

People across the country could be entitled to £25 a week towards their heating bills thanks to the Government's Cold Weather Payment scheme.

The money is available to anyone struggling to pay their bills when the temperature drops in autumn and winter.

Cold Weather Payments have been available since November 1 and are designed to help people with limited incomes pay their heating bills.

The additional money is on top of any other benefits claimed - so people do not have to make a choice between heating and eating.

In order to be eligible for these payments, the average temperature in your area must be either recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees or colder for seven days in a row, writes The Express.

The money will be available to claim until March next year, 2021.

You can find out whether you are eligible then you can use the UK Government's online checker here.

Baroness Stedman-Scott, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the DWP, is urging people to check to see if they are eligible.

"Winter can be a difficult time for people, and our Cold Weather Payment will help you keep your home warm as temperatures drop," she said.

"Payments are made automatically but if you think you might be eligible, you can check online to see if your area is due a payment and plan accordingly."
