Check exam stats for every South Lanarkshire high school as tables are unveiled

Strathaven Academy has been revealed as the best performing high school in South Lanarkshire.

The Academy topped the league table for exam attainment in the South Lanarkshire Council area in 2017-18, with 61 per cent of pupils achieving five Highers or more.

In the Hamilton area, the figures released by Education Scotland show that Holy Cross High and Hamilton Grammar have the highest percentage of pupils who attained five or more Highers, with 42 per cent each.

The figures identify how schools are performing and were released individually by the government body for each school in Scotland last week.

However, we’ve collated the local statistics so that you can see how your child’s school is performing compared with other schools in the area.

Our statistics measure the percentage of pupils at each school leaving with one or more Highers, three or more Highers and five or more Highers.

As you can see from our chart, Strathaven Academy outperforms all other high schools in the Advertiser circulation area at every level.

On the flip side, Blantyre’s Calderside Academy could arguably be dubbed the worst performing, having just 24 per cent of pupils achieving five Highers or more.

Of the Clydesdale schools, Biggar High is the best performing, with 40 per cent, with Carluke High having the lowest number at 30 per cent.

South Lanarkshire Council education chiefs warned of using the figures as the main indicator of a school’s success, and insisted they were just one of many factors.

However, the 2017-18 figures were welcomed as a success.

Stewart Nicolson, Head of Education (Senior Phase) for the authority, said: “The SQA exam results serve as a reminder of the successes and achievements of our young people in 2018, and we extend our congratulations to those achieving success in all of our schools.

“These results not only reflect positive outcomes for the pupils concerned, but are used by schools to plan for improving and extending the range of opportunities they provide.

“Whilst exam results are important, they reflect only one aspect of the tremendous work going on.

“Our schools provide a wide range of activities and programmes to enable young people to acquire qualifications, skills and competences and to prepare for life beyond school.

“It’s also important to look at a range of different information sources, together with data about each school’s individual context, to build a true picture of how well it is doing.

“A broader insight to each school is provided in its handbook, website, and through regular communications with parents.

“All of these are designed to help parents better understand their child’s school experience, and to encourage positive engagement and dialogue between home
and school.”
