'Cheapskate' flies half way around the world and for less than a train ticket to London

A travel enthusiast managed to travel across the world for less than the price of a train ticket to London from many UK cities. Self-proclaimed 'cheapskate' Bailey Turvey said he simply looked online for the cheapest option.

The travel writer bought tickets for the 50-hour journey from London to Guatemala for just £152. However it's not for the faint-hearted - and did take him 50 hours and three stopovers to get there.

In comparison, an any time open return train ticket from Bristol to London will set you back around £238. An open return from Liverpool to London at peak hour is £263 while the same journey from Manchester is around £250 if you're travelling at peak time.

Bailey told his 38.4K TiKTok followers that he only spent £40 on food and drink and less than £50 on taxis. This was despite spending time in three different cities during his two-day trip, Bristol Live reports.

He said: "I took a 50-hour flight to the other side of the world because I'm a cheapskate and didn't wanna pay over £600 to get there and this is how it went."

He had Barcelona and Boston, where he had a 30-hour layover, before going on a five-hour flight to Guatemala from JFK airport in New York. He said he 'stupidly' didn't check the weather forecast for Boston and was met with freezing temperatures. He then spent the day wandering around Harvard University 'pretending' to be a student before heading to sleep due to jet lag.

His followers had mixed feelings about his epic journey. One person said: "As someone that absolutely hates being on planes I could never do this but kudos to you." Another wrote: "My back and legs says no".

Someone else questioned how he managed to get his cheap flights. He replied: "Just randomly scrolling on Skyscanner! I knew there would be cheap options from the US to Guatemala so looked at the cheapest way from Europe to US."
