Cheapest supermarket to buy Christmas dinner named - and it's not Lidl, Tesco or Asda

Christmas is only three days away and - let's face it - the one thing we are all looking forward to is the Christmas dinner that we will pile on our plates.

While the food is certainly a high point of the big day, getting your dinner table centre-piece and festive trimmings can take a toll on your bank account.

That's why finance experts from Little Loans have found out which supermarket is officially the most budget-friendly for shoppers to get their turkey dinner from - and it's not Lidl, Tesco or Asda.

According to the study, Aldi takes the crown as the cheapest supermarket for shoppers to buy a full Christmas dinner from this year.

The research was compiled of nine major supermarkets in the UK, with Aldi taking the top spot at just over £20 - which is half the price of an M&S Christmas dinner.

The budget supermarket was followed closely by Lidl who came in at second place, with a full Christmas dinner costing just £23.08.

Experts at the credit broker recorded the price of a full festive feast that included:

  • A whole turkey (medium)
  • Pigs in blankets
  • Roast potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Red cabbage
  • Gravy granules
  • Stuffing
  • Cranberry sauce

Prices of supermarket Christmas dinners

  • Aldi - £21.99
  • Lidl - £23.08
  • Tesco - £27.30
  • Asda - £28.45
  • Sainsbury's - £30.64
  • Morrisons - £31.83
  • Waitrose - £40.28
  • M&S - £44.18
  • Co-op - £50.70

Out of all the supermarkets included, only two other stores offered a full Christmas dinner for under £30, with Tesco coming third place (£27.30) and Asda coming in fourth (£28.45.)

On the opposite end of the scale, Waitrose (£40.28) and M&S (£44.18) continue to be two of the more expensive places to buy your dinner and trimmings from.

Co-op was crowned this year's most expensive supermarket.

The overall cost of their Christmas dinner came in at a whopping £50.70 - almost a full £30 more expensive than Aldi.

Consumer finance expert Paul Wilson commented: “Food is the highlight of Christmas day for many people, and the data just goes to show that you can still indulge in a Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings without breaking the bank.”

“Christmas can be done on a budget - just make sure you’re doing your research to get the best bargains available before the big day. The food will taste even sweeter knowing that you’ve saved £30!”
