Britain's cheapest supermarket has been named - and it isn't Tesco, Asda or Lidl

Britain's 'cheapest' supermarket has been named in a price comparison that looked at the cost of 74 essential items at Aldi, Lidl and the six biggest grocers.

It comes as households in the UK are facing growing uncertainty in the coming months as thousands of employers prepare to cut jobs in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

As a result, many families will be cutting back on unnecessary spending - but where can you save on your groceries?

Well, a new supermarket price comparison has compared the cost of 74 popular branded and own-brand items at Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

The Which? report looked aT prices for 31 days to reveal the cheapest grocer over the summer holiday period.

The report looked at the prices of semi-skimmed milk, free-range eggs, Hovis wholemeal bread and Knorr vegetable stock pots to work out which supermarket was the cheapest, on average, across the month.

The shopping list combined branded items, such as Kenco Millicano coffee, and Twinings English breakfast tea, with own-label products including pasta, lettuce and milk.

It found a significant difference between the cheapest supermarket, where a trolley of goods would have cost £66.45, and the priciest, where you would have paid £105.25.

The cheapest supermarket in August was Aldi, where a trolley of groceries would have set households back £66.45.

Lidl was just behind with the same items adding up to £67.17.

Julie Ashfield, at Aldi, said: "We know that this is a difficult time for many and so we are incredibly proud to have maintained our position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket. We remain wholly committed to continuing to provide our customers with the best value products of any supermarket."

Asda was the cheapest 'big four' supermarket, with a basket of goods rolling in at £74.12.

Upmarket Waitrose was £38 more expensive than Aldi at £105.25 for the same items.

Which? also compared a trolley of 165 items (the original 74 items, plus 91 more) to reveal the cheapest grocer for a super-sized shop.

This included a selection of branded items, such as Branston baked beans and Flash cleaning spray, not typically available all year round from the discounters.

Asda, at £256.31, was by far the cheapest supermarket - costing £15.41 less than its nearest rival Tesco.

Compared with priciest supermarket Waitrose (£322.87), Asda shoppers could have saved an eye-watering £66.55.
