Cheapest supermarket in the UK named and it's not Tesco, Lidl or Asda

The cheapest supermarket in the UK has been revealed this week - and it's not Tesco, Lidl or Asda.

Popular retailer Aldi has been recognised as the cheapest supermarket in the UK by consumer champion Which?, beating the likes of Lidl, Asda and Tesco to take the crown.

The news closely follows Aldi's recognition as the UK's favourite supermarket earlier this year.

Aldi has amassed an army of loyal shoppers since it was first founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946, when they took over their mother's store in Essen in Germany.

The budget-friendly retailer is well known for its SpecialBuys, which take pride of place in Aldi's middle aisle and usually include everything from homeware, gym equipment, baby products and more. SpecialBuys are usually released every Thursday and Sunday.

Consumer group Which? conducted the cheapest supermarket price comparison and looked at the cost of 20 items, including groceries and household essentials, with Aldi coming in cheapest at just £22.64.

The consumer group's research found Aldi was a massive £8.25 cheaper than the most expensive supermarket for an equivalent trolley of items.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi, said: "We continue to focus on providing the best possible value to our customers, and are immensely proud to be named the UK’s cheapest supermarket for April."

Lidl finished in second place, with an average trolley cost of £22.76 - just 12p more expensive than Aldi.

In third place was supermarket giant Asda, with an average cost of £24.95.
