Cheapest supermarket in the UK is named with Tesco, Asda, and Sainsbury's missing out

The UK's cheapest supermarket has been named and it is neither of the big four such as Asda or Tesco.

The results were revealed by Which? who carried out a price comparison by looking at the cost of a trolley with 74 items including a mix of groceries and household essentials.

Branded and own-label items at Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose were tested every day throughout August.

It won't come as a surprise to many to see Aldi named the cheapest supermarket for August, with its trolley totalling £66.45, which was £15.66 less than Tesco, who came in fourth place.

Groceries price tested included everything from semi-skimmed milk and free-range eggs to Hovis wholemeal bread and Knorr vegetable stock pots, to work out which supermarket was the cheapest, on average, across the month.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi, said: “We know that this is a difficult time for many and so we are incredibly proud to have maintained our position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket.

"We remain wholly committed to continuing to provide our customers with the best value products of any supermarket.”

Asda was the cheapest ‘big four’ supermarket, with its trolley totalling £74.12. Waitrose was more than £38 more expensive than Aldi at £105.25 for the same items.
