Cheapest places in the UK for petrol and diesel revealed - at 118.9p a litre

If you're planning a bank holiday road trip, or are getting back home after the long weekend, there's some good news.

Anyone passing by one of these places could save themselves a packet when filling up - after the cheapest places for petrol and diesel were revealed.

“Fuel prices can vary massively across the country; it can vary up to 30p a litre between the cheapest station and the most expensive motorway station," said Kitty Bates of  PetrolPrices.com , who revealed the results.

"Checking for the cheapest or best value station near you, en route or at your destination can save you money. We have calculated that our members saved around £200 a year by comparing petrol stations near them."

Finding the cheap petrol stations

Research from the AA over Easter uncovered hidden 'oases' where you can save money just off the motorway if you know where to look.

"Motorway petrol cost as much as 145.9p a litre yesterday, more than 20p a litre or £10 a tank more expensive than the UK average," the AA said.

"However, there are hidden ‘oases’ of considerably cheaper fuel on or just off the highway."

For holidaymakers heading to the West Country on the M5, pulling off at  junction 27 can see the price drop to just 122.7p a litre by filling up at the Gulf station in Tiverton.

People heading to Wales on the M4 can cut their price per litre down to just 119.9p by pulling off at junction 23A and heading to Tesco in Newport.

Those travelling to the Lake District on the M6 can find petrol at 119.7p a litre third of a mile from junction 44 at ASDA in Carlisle.

The AA tracked down these deals using the fuel price search function on its app , but for non-members there's also the petrolprices.com app or WhatGas.com .
