Cheap supermarket cakes being transformed into masterpieces with simple trick

Having a show-stopping birthday cake that looks straight out of Bake Off doesn't need to involve spending a fortune at a bespoke bakery, you can probably get the same thing from your local supermarket. You'll just need to make a few easy tweaks...

Savvy shoppers all across the nation are opting to buy cheaper supermarket cakes and turn them into impressive ones that look a lot more expensive.

It all began when a shopper named Emily posted photos of how she turned a £3.49 Lidl party cake into a Willy Wonka-worthy wonder.

By simply adding chocolate fingers to separate out the cake, and M&M's and white chocolate buttons to fill each section, Emily turned the standard shop-bought offering into something a lot more unique.

After sharing the pictures on Facebook page Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK , the thread amassed huge amounts of pictures and comments from fellow shoppers who had done the same.

Often called Cinderella cakes, other top designs included adding wafer rolls, crushed up biscuit and a little icing, plus their little ones favourite Disney figures to create a Moana-themed cake, as well another who amped up a plain white Costco cake by buying a few cake decorations off etsy , which sells unique craft items.

But perhaps our favourite transformation of the lot is from Eve Bourne, who said "I got a drip cake from Sainsbury’s and added the rest, also ordered the name from eBay ".

By adding a few party biscuits and decorations we're convinced this number could pass as a £40 boutique bakery offering.

As well as saving you a fortune, it's also a very quick way to quickly come up with a cake, with Gemma Louise Jenner swiftly doing a similar thing with a multipack of Kinder Buenos for her little one, explaining how she "Did the same with a £3 Sainsbury’s choc fudge cake to make my daughter a quick and easy kinder cake she asked for last minute".
