ChatGPT was down — latest updates on outage

Phone with Chatgpt logo.

ChatGPT suffered some sort of outage, with users reporting that the AI chatbot was not working. We noticed an initial spike on the outage tracking site Down Detector around 7:45 a.m. PT.

However, that spike quickly went away only to return two hours later, around 9:30 a.m. The second spike lasted from about 8:45 a.m. until 10 a.m.

The official OpenAI status page had ChatGPT listed as "experiencing issues." Specifically, it said the AI assistant is having "conversation errors." There were also issues surrounding subscriptions and the Help Center briefly went down as well.

The status page listed that a fix was implemented around 10 a.m., which seemed to work as reports went down and the status changed to green from red.

Because the system seemed to be yo-yoing up and down, we kept an eye on it longer than we would usually would, but things seem to be stable now. The AI video generator, Sora seemed to have issues as well, but that doesn't seem to be as widespread as the ChatGPT outage.

Keep it here as we track the outage and provide the latest updates on the current ChatGPT issues.

OpenAI's biggest AI model has gone down for varying periods several times this year, with the most recent major incident occurring in June.

As mentioned, ChatGPT initially went down around 7:45 a.m. Pacific before quickly resolving.

The current spikes shows over 2,000 reports on Down Detector starting around 9:30 a.m. Pacific.

The official OpenAI status page is showing ChatGPT as "experiencing issues."

As of this post the status page shows the Help Center down and ChatGPT having "conversation errors."

I'm also seeing an elevated error rate and a failure to load "subscriscription issue."

What social media is saying

I haven't seen anything official from OpenAI beyond the status page.

But there are complaints on social media. Over on the ChatGPT subreddit, there are several posts with people saying the model either isn't loading or is moving very slowly.

One user posted an image that showed a "too many concurrent requests" error.

How widespread is it?

Are you experiencing issues with ChatGPT?

I tested it out with the vague prompt, "Do something" and it ended up telling me a short story before asking if I wanted the story as a comic.

Another colleague reported that ChatGPT is working fine for them.

Another short spike?

After hitting a peak around 2,000 reports, things have taken a deep dive to around 500 reports on DD.

The OpenAI status page has not changed and lists the company has investigating the issue.

It's been a bit of a rollercoaster today. The first spike dropped down to around 500 reports before the second one popped up.

So, I'm going to keep an eye on things in case it continues to dip and rise.

Fix implemented

OpenAI is now saying that it has "applied the mitigation" to ChatGPT and are monitoring the model's recovery.

It seems to be working as reports have finally hit around 200 on down Detector.
