ChatGPT might soon allow users to talk dirty as part of a push for the chatbot to “treat adult users like adults”, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
“As we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more [content], like erotica for verified adults,” Altman announced on X on Wednesday.
Altman said the update will now allow for sexually explicit material to be shared between users and their chatbots — including potentially explicit chats — but the extent of what will classify as “erotica” is not yet known.
The hornier version of ChatGPT is expected to come into effect sometime in December, with Altman saying the earlier, PG version of the chatbot was “pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues”.
“We realise this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems,” Altman said, amid ongoing concerns over AI’s impact on mental health.
The CEO added that the erotic version of ChatGPT will be rolled out now that “we have been able to mitigate” the mental health risks, allowing previous restrictions to “safely relax in most cases”.
Altman stressed that the option for sexually explicit content would only be available to adult-aged users, and said it only needs to be used by those who are into that kind of thing. Read: probably millions of horny users.
The announcement was met with widespread concerns over whether safeguards would be in place, to the point where Altman was forced to clarify the update in a follow up post shared earlier today.
“[My] tweet about upcoming changes to ChatGPT blew up on the erotica point much more than I thought it was going to! It was meant to be just one example of us allowing more user freedom for adults,” he wrote.
Altman stressed that the new update would not erode any exisiting guardrails as part of the update, saying ChatGPT is “not loosening any policies related to mental health”.
It comes just months after xAI, the AI company owned by Elon Musk, began rolling out sexually explicit chatbots through Grok.
Those anime-looking chatbots reportedly get horny when prompted, and can feed sexually explicit content back to users.
