ChatGPT Go Plan Is Now Free for Users in India

There’s good news for ChatGPT users in India. OpenAI is giving all its users in the country free access to its ChatGPT Go plan for one year, starting November 4, 2025. According to the company, this move underscores its growing commitment to the Indian market, which has become ChatGPT’s second-largest and fastest-growing user base worldwide.

The free access rollout will coincide with OpenAI’s DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru. Starting November 4, Indian users will automatically be upgraded to the ChatGPT Go plan at no cost for one full year. Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers will receive an additional 12 months of access for free. More details on the rollout for current subscribers are expected to arrive soon.

The ChatGPT Go is the company’s cheapest plan, offering access to OpenAI’s latest GPT-5 model and including higher daily message limits, faster response times, expanded image generation, and more memory for personalised replies. Users can also upload and process multiple files and images; these features were previously available only to paying customers. Currently, the ChatGPT Go plan costs Rs 399 per month in India, which is around $4.

The decision comes as part of OpenAI’s India-first strategy to drive deeper engagement among students, developers, and professionals. The company is also aligning this move with the government’s IndiaAI Mission to promote AI adoption across sectors. According to OpenAI, paid subscriptions in India doubled within a month of the ChatGPT Go plan’s initial launch in August, and the plan later expanded to around 16 markets globally.

ChatGPT Go was first introduced in India before making its way to other developing markets. But will OpenAI extend this free access to those regions as well? That seems unlikely. India’s position as the world’s second-largest internet market makes it a strategic priority for OpenAI, and this offer clearly signals how central India has become to the company’s global expansion plans.
