Chase host Bradley Walsh breaks down on This Morning over care home crisis

Bradley Walsh broke down in tears on This Morning today during a debate about the care home crisis.

The ITV show started with a special report into care homes and how people have been unable to see their loved ones for months.

Earlier this week the show had a caller who was struggling to cope with depression after being separated from his wife in a care home for months.

Today the show talked to more people who hadn't seen their parents.

One of the families, whose mum was suffering with dementia in a care home, said: "Technology can't replace touch, how are dementia patients meant to recognise their family on a screen?

"She is living her last months, weeks and days, on her own, I don't know if I'm going to be able to get over that if anything happens to her and we can't be with her.

"Am I going to be Skyping her on her deathbed."

The programme also focused on a woman who had been unable to see her son Sam who was ill with Huntington's and in residential care.

Bradley Walsh came on the show to speak about the crisis and the campaign to let people see their families.

Bradley chatted to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield after being alerted to the campaign by his wife.

The Chase host chatted about the situation and then became visibly upset.

In tears he said: "I'm so sorry, it's so heartbreaking.

"It's hard enough to see your parents go, but if your child is going to go before you, something needs to be done.

"I apologise, it's so upsetting and I had no idea, no idea.

"People you leave behind are going to be scarred for life if they can't say goodbye, it's tragic, it's just tragic, it really is."

Phillip Schofield also lent his support to the campaign and urged the government to change their minds and let families see their loved ones.

He said: "We've learnt a lot during this pandemic, but something needs to be done for these people and their families."

And viewers at home were also left in tears by the scenes.

Alecia said: "After watching Bradley Walsh in tears on this morning we need to do some thing about family’s torn apart ,those with illnesses who are isolating alone in care homes etc ,who may never see a family member before they die."

Tommybhoy said: "Bradley Walsh. What a man. He's genuinely breaking his heart. Such a sad story."

Kim Dearlove said: "Watching @ thismorning in tears. My dad is in a care home. I want to protect him ,but we need to see him & he needs to see us."

*This Morning continues at 10am on ITV tomorrow
