Running back Chase Edmonds is among the first group of players at his position to wear a single-digit number. After wearing No. 29 for his first three seasons in the league, he has swapped it for No. 2.
He wore No. 22 in college at Fordham and was known as Deuce Deuce.
He is bringing back the nickname. It isn’t Deuce Deuce. Now it’s just Deuce.
When OTAs began at the beginning of the month, he told reporters he felt good about the number change.
“It felt real good to put on that No. 2,” he said after the first practice of OTAs. “I kind of like being called Deuce. That’s kind of where my roots were at Fordham.”
Back in his college days, he was a workhorse back. His freshman through his junior seasons, he had over 250 carries each year.
In three seasons in the pros, he has a total of 217 total rushing attempts. That should change this coming season.
He has the opportunity to be the Cardinals’ top back. While he will compete with James Conner for touches, he believes he can be a 20-touch player between rushing attempts and receptions.
He knows this is the year to shine.
That is part of the reason why he has a new number.
“It was just something where it was kind of a mental thing for me that I want to distinguish myself from my first three years,” he said. “I’m really trying to take the next step as a player and as a man this year.”
Entering the final year of his contract and preparing for free agency in 2022, it will benefit both him and the Cardinals if he accomplishes everything he hopes to.
