Chartpattana likely to back majority bid

Suwat Liptapanlop, leader of the Chartpattana Party

The Chartpattana Party has dropped a hint that it would back the party most likely to be able to form a coalition government.

"Chartpattana would take into consideration acceptance from the voice of the majority," said Suwat Liptapanlop, the party's chief adviser, responding to media questions for the first time since the general election on March 24 about who his party would consider entering a deal with.

He said he was uncertain which parties would be able to form a government.

Asked whether he had confidence in Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the prime ministerial candidate of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), Mr Suwat simply said: "The people have chosen."

Chartpattana is tipped to gain three MPs, which Mr Suwat described was "lower than expected".

"The party has yet to talk with other camps, pending the official election results, which will come out on May 9," said Mr Suwat.

"There could also be a re-run, which may change things."

He said he was concerned about the stability of the next government as neither side has gathered 300 MPs so far, adding this would make it difficult to push through legislation.

PPRP secretary-general Sontirat Sontijirawong said the party will invite all its MPs-elect for a meeting tomorrow to extend congratulations as well as explain party plans.

The party is likely to gain 97 constituency MPs and 19 party-list MPs, Mr Sontirat said.

Regarding intensifying moves to impeach the election commissioners, who ware accused of mishandling the poll, Mr Sontirat said the Election Commission (EC) must come out to clarify doubts raised by the public.

He said the PPRP has also called on the poll regulator to provide an explanation.

According to him, the PPRP has filed petitions with the EC about irregularities in 10 constituencies.

He said the formation of the new government will be clear when the official poll results are announced on May 9.

He also posted on his Facebook page, calling on all sides to respect the people's voice.

"The party is worried about divisions that could lead to conflict, which would be damaging for the country," Mr Sontirat's post read.
