Chart shows how coronavirus cases have gone up in Bolton since the start of the local lockdown

The number of coronavirus cases has gone up in Bolton since the start of the local lockdown imposed across Greater Manchester.

When the restrictions were brought in on July 31, the borough was one of the few areas where there had not been a recent sharp rise in cases.

But there has been a clear upward trend during the first seven days of the local lockdown.

On July 31, there had been a total of 57 cases in the previous week in Bolton but a week later, on August 7, the seven-day total had risen to 81, an increase of over 42 per cent.

There were 20 positive tests on Monday July 3rd, which is the highest daily total for a month.

It means that the coronavirus rate per 100,000 people rose from 19.8 to 28.2 over the same timescale, with Bolton among the 20 areas in England with the highest infection rates.

An infection rate of over 25 means an area is placed on 'amber' alert for possible intervention or further lockdown restrictions.

Although the rates have gone up to more than 80 cases in a week, they are only a fraction of the numbers seen at the peak of the pandemic when over 240 people were tested positive in a seven-day period.

The number of coronavirus patients dying in hospital also remains low with no deaths reported at the Royal Bolton Hospital in the last five days.

Part of the reason the number for the number of positive tests increasing is likely to be that more people are being tested, although Public Health England does not release the data for the number of tests in each area.

But even with the increased testing, the government still tracks the number of positive tests as a key measurement when determining if an area requires extra restrictions to control the spread of coronavirus.
