Chart of the day: Does speaking another language hurt your education opportunities?

The Government is worried about new migrants not speaking English, and Channel 7 is sparking fears about "African gangs" on the streets.

So what are young people from migrant homes up to?

Well, a significant proportion of them are at uni.

Analysis of Census data by the Grattan Institute's Andrew Norton finds that 18 to 20-years-olds from households where another language is spoken at home are far more likely to be studying at university than those from homes where only English is spoken.
