We're (nearly) all spending up on takeaways and dining out

Australians have never had more options when it comes to dining out, and the rise of food delivery apps has made it easier than ever to get restaurant-made food dropped at the front door.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data analysed by ABARES shows that in 1988, about 25 per cent of the food budget was spent eating out, a number that grew to 34 per cent in 2015/16, averaging just over $1,600 each every year.

But if we break that down by income type, pensioners and others depending on government allowances spend less than half as much as the rest of the population on meals out and fast foods, while the other main categories remain roughly similar.
