Chart of the day: Voter distrust isn't new, but it's getting worse

The leadership coup that saw Scott Morrison installed as Prime Minister led voters to accuse the Government of being more focused on itself than governing the country.

But surveys conducted after federal elections show that voter trust in government has been low at least since the days when Malcolm Fraser was PM, when 71 per cent of voters thought the government was too often interested in looking after itself.

Voter distrust reached an all-time high after the Coalition was elected in 2016, with 74 per cent expressing their cynicism.
