Chart of the day: The country where a quarter of all deaths are due to booze

Death by booze? Australia is actually below average.

If you thought Aussies hit the bottle a bit too hard, then spare a thought for the small country of Moldova.

Nestled between Ukraine and Romania, this patch of Europe may be landlocked but its residents seem to have no problem finding ways to wet their whistle.

In fact, it has the highest proportion of deaths relating to alcohol of any country in the world, according to the latest World Health Organisation report.

More than a quarter — 26.1 per cent — of all deaths there in 2016 were attributable to booze.

This compares to 4.6 per cent in Australia and a global average of 5.3 per cent.
