According to data from Google Trends, interest in their nickname, "bin chicken", has seen a sharp rise over the past 18 months.
The boom seemingly got into full flight around April 2017, not long after a Planet Earth parody video featuring bin chickens was uploaded to YouTube.
They narrowly missed out on the "bird of the year" title last year — but perhaps 2018 is the year of the bin chicken.
