If you were asked to name a country leading the world in gender equality, you might not automatically think of the African nation Rwanda.
But its representation of women in its Lower House of Parliament is the highest in the world at 61.3 per cent, beating Australia's 28.7 per cent at the 2016 election, according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Thirteen other African nations, including war-torn Sudan, also have greater female representation in their Lower House or unicameral (one chamber) Parliament.
And 11 countries in the Americas also trump us, including regional leader Cuba at 53.2 per cent.
Many countries have leapfrogged us since the IPU started collecting data in 1997, including Nepal, Nicaragua and even Zimbabwe.
