Chart of the day: just how much of Australia's population growth is down to immigrants?

Australia's population is just about to tick over the 25-million mark. But our expanding number is not just thanks to baby-making.

Net overseas migration (the number of people moving to Australia from overseas minus the number of Australians leaving to live elsewhere) accounted for about 60 per cent of population growth last year.

And that net overseas migration, combined with the natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) is expected to see the population clock hit 25 million just after 11:00pm.
