Compared to women, men have an extra 99 hours a year where they're not working, doing housework or caring for dependants, according to new survey data.
That's almost two extra hours a week.
This year's Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey finds Australians are becoming less traditional in their views about gender roles but the reality of how men and women spend their time remains very different.
Among the findings:
- Married women with children do more than 60 per cent of the housework and caring for dependants, on average.
- Married fathers spend more time at work than anyone else, on average.
- Men are doing an extra hour of housework per week than they did 14 years ago.
- Across the average week, married mothers spend an extra three hours working, doing housework and caring for dependants than married fathers do. For de facto parents, that gap is four hours.
