Liam Rosenior made a winning start to life as Chelsea head coach on Saturday as the Blues beat Charlton 3-1 to progress in the FA Cup. The Blues made a tentative start to the match, but led shortly before half-time through Jorrel Hato’s emphatic volley, drilled into the roof of the net. Tosin Adarabioyo made it two shortly after the break, but Chelsea were then pegged back by Myles Leaburn.
Marc Guiu then quelled the rebellion, however, scoring from close range to restore the two-goal advantage, before substitute Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez both added finishing touches in injury-time to seal the occasion. It was a perfect start to Rosenior’s premiership as he became the first Chelsea manager to win on debut since Antonio Conte in 2016.
There were some huge cupsets earlier in the day, most notably non-league Macclesfield’s shock defeat of Crystal Palace, but Chelsea did not suffer such a fate. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis from Dom Smith at The Valley.

For Charlton, it is Rankin-Costello, Gillesphey, and Anderson on for Kelman, Docherty, and Coventry.
Estevao comes on in place of Gittens, who had a great game.
Charlton 1-3 Chelsea
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge64mins: Handbags between Tosin and Kelman after the latter caught Jorgensen a little late. The conflict amounts to very little as Estevao is being readied to come on.
GOAL! Charlton 1-3 Chelsea | Guiu 62'
21:27 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea’s two-goal advantage is restored! Another good save from Mannion but it falls to the feet of Marc Guiu at the edge of the six-yard box, and it is as easy a finish as you could get.

Charlton 0-2 Chelsea
21:18 , Arthur Ferridge53mins: CLOSE! Garnacho squares up to Bree and has him backpedalling. He doesn’t quite wrap his foot all the way around his shot, though, and his effort is just wide of the far post.
Charlton 0-2 Chelsea
21:17 , Arthur Ferridge52mins: Another presentable set-piece chance for Charlton, but it is headed wide of the mark.
Dom Smith at The Valley
21:16 , Arthur FerridgeA bit of breathing space for Chelsea now just after the interval, and it's another unlikely scorer in Tosin Adarabioyo, there to nod in from the free-kick. You'd suspect it'll be a comfortable evening for the Blues from here.

Dom Smith at The Valley
20:52 , Arthur FerridgeCelebrations in the dugout from the new coaching staff, and muted celebrations on the pitch. It's been hard work, but Chelsea have the lead - and through Jorrel Hato of all people. Some volley, that.
GOAL! Charlton 0-1 Chelsea | Hato 45+4'
20:51 , Arthur FerridgeJorrel Hato is the unlikely scorer of the first goal of the Liam Rosenior era! It is an emphatic finish from the Dutchman, who smashes a rebound into the top-left corner. Not much Mannion could have done about that!
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:48 , Arthur Ferridge45+1mins: A low-driven effort demands yet another save from Mannion. Comfortable but crucial stop from the Charlton ‘keeper.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea

Seven minutes are added on to end the first-half.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea

The Addicks, meanwhile, play on and win a corner.

Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:36 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: It is not an unfamiliar pattern, this, Chelsea dominating possession but failing to create in attack.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:35 , Arthur Ferridge34mins: Acheampong catches a shot sweetly and a high-quality save is demanded of Mannion to keep this match deadlocked.

Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:32 , Arthur Ferridge31mins: A bit of a melee as the free-kick swings in and one shot gets away, but Santos is there to block it. Docherty then goes into the book for manhandling Gittens as he attempted to counter.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:32 , Arthur Ferridge30mins: Charlton have a set piece on the right flank, about 40 yards back.
Dom Smith at The Valley
20:31 , Arthur FerridgeTwo juicy nutmegs from Charlton in the space of about two seconds. They're enjoying their moment in the spotlight, the Addicks fans. Chelsea have still created very little!
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:30 , Arthur Ferridge29mins: Gittens is the latest to have a pop for Chelsea, and his effort is well high, well wide.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:29 , Arthur Ferridge28mins: Guiu has really struggled to involve himself so far. Has hardly had a touch.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:27 , Arthur Ferridge26mins: Tosin, for reasons best known to himself, lets fly from 25 or 30 yards. His shot is well over the bar.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:25 , Arthur Ferridge24mins: Acheampong is getting into some very attacking positions, here. He’s providing an interesting link-up between the defensive midfield, Gittens, and Buonanotte.
Dom Smith at The Valley
20:23 , Arthur FerridgeSo much of Chelsea's play is going through Andrey Santos, who is being trusted as the heartbeat as Rosenior's team tonight. The visitors hunting for some rhythm now that the game is back underway. Still goalless a quarter of the way through the match.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea

Dom Smith at The Valley
20:15 , Arthur FerridgeThe emergency appears to be an elderly man falling ill. He is being applauded around the ground, as are the paramedics, and he has just raised an arm to thank one of them. We wish him well.
Dom Smith at The Valley
20:13 , Arthur FerridgeThere are paramedics making their way to the person who is in need of seeing to.

Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:11 , Arthur Ferridge9mins: Campbell breaks forward and gets a shot away, but he shanks it pretty badly. Won’t have worried Jorgensen at all.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:09 , Arthur Ferridge8mins: Gittens gets away from Campbell and fizzes a cross low across the box, but Mannion gets down to it before it can find a blue shirt.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:06 , Arthur Ferridge5mins: Badiashile goes into the book early on for a clumsy tackle on Leaburn.
Charlton 0-0 Chelsea

Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:02 , Arthur Ferridge1min: This, purportedly, is the biggest crowd The Valley has hosted for a cup match since 1976. A sell-out at the 27,111-capacity ground.
KICK-OFF! Charlton 0-0 Chelsea
20:01 , Arthur FerridgeWe’re off! The first match of the Liam Rosenior era is underway.
Here we go...

Tangible atmosphere at The Valley.
Cup football. You can’t not love it.
Rosenior previews the tie
19:53 , Arthur FerridgeLiam Rosenior has spoken to TNT Sport about tonight’s match.
On his managerial debut: “Really excited. Proud to be head coach of this football club, and it has felt like three weeks, let alone three days. I’m really looking forward to it.”
On eight changes to the squad: “We have a very good squad and a lot of games in a short space of time. I have faith in every player in this group. I want to give players the chance to show the fans and the club what they are about.”
On preparing for this match in three days: “It hasn’t been a challenge, it has been a joy. I want results at this club. We haven’t had much time on the training pitch, but we have talked about values and what we’ll stand for, and the players have been really receptive.”
Team news reminder
19:50 , Arthur FerridgeTen minutes to go until kick-off. Here’s a reminder of tonight’s teams.

Chelsea XI: Jorgensen; Acheampong, Tosin, Badiashile, Hato; Caicedo, Santos; Gittens, Buonanotte, Garnacho; Guiu
Rosenior immediately under pressure?
19:45 , Arthur FerridgeLiam Rosenior was full of wisecracks in his first Chelsea press conference and got a good few chuckles out of the media.
One wonders, looking at that matchday squad, whether he’ll be in such a chipper mood at full-time.
Liam Rosenior: "Are you talking about negatives? Of course you are, you're a journalist!" 😅 pic.twitter.com/2WVkdBsO9e

Tottenham knocked out
19:44 , Arthur FerridgeAston Villa win 2-1 at Hotspur Stadium to knock Tottenham out of the FA Cup!
Considerable handbags at full-time, which doesn’t really reflect well on anyone involved.
Yet more scrutiny builds on Thomas Frank. Spurs find themselves out of both domestic cup competitions before the end of January.
Facundo Buonanotte
19:41 , Arthur FerridgeFacundo Buonanotte joined Chelsea on loan from Brighton this season, but he hasn’t played much of a role.
He starts tonight for the first time since facing Cardiff away in the Carabao Cup.
Before that, his last start came against Wolves in October.
Inside the away dressing room
19:39 , Arthur FerridgeA far cry from the luxuries of Stamford Bridge.
So tight is it that temporary seating has been added to accomodate the full Chelsea squad!

Charlton changes
19:35 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea made eight changes tonight, and Charlton have followed suit.
Nathan Jones rotates four men out of the side which drew 2-2 at Blackburn on Sunday.
Will Mannion comes in between the sticks, while outfielders Keenan Gough, Sonny Carey and Greg Doucherty also get the nod.
Dom Smith at The Valley
19:30 , Arthur FerridgePlenty of Chelsea players in need of good performances today to press their cases for further game time under the new head coach. Among them, Badiashile, Gittens, Guiu and Buonanotte.
A reminder that Standard Sport is bringing you live coverage of Tottenham vs Aston Villa at the moment.
Spurs are presently trailing 2-1, with just under a quarter of an hour remaining.
Marc Guiu
19:23 , Arthur FerridgeChelsea fans should be excited to see Marc Guiu get another start tonight.
He is a young striker and La Masia graduate with limitless potential.
The Spaniard has been limited mostly to cameos this season, but has two goals in his four starts.
Welcome back...
19:15 , Arthur FerridgeDario Essugo is back from the dead and named to the bench for this FA Cup tie.
He picked up a thing injury on international duty many moons ago, and is finally back in contention.

What to make of the Chelsea XI
19:06 , Arthur FerridgeWell, isn’t that an interesting team from Liam Rosenior?
Jorrel Hato, rarely used by Maresca, gets a start at left-back, while Moises Caicedo takes the captain’s armband.
Reece James and Cole Palmer are both left out, as is Malo Gusto.
Marc Guiu gets a rare start up top, too, with Facundo Buonanotte brought back in from the cold as a No10.

All will be revealed at 7pm!
Inside the Rosenior appointment
18:45 , Arthur FerridgeDom Smith unpacks the Maresca-Rosenior transition in this week’s Standard Sport long read...
Doing things differently was not a New Year’s resolution for the Chelsea hierarchy.
They may have a new head coach in Liam Rosenior, but otherwise it’s very much as you were. The BlueCo project ploughs on undiverted.
Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day came after his relationship with his bosses soured.
It came just 20 days after he’d been named Premier League manager of month for November, but “head coach of the month” might have been more appropriate, given the dilution of the head coach’s role explained the power struggle that spelt the end of his reign.
The BlueCo consortium own Strasbourg as well as Chelsea and have appointed Rosenior, the French club’s English head coach, as Maresca’s replacement.
Rosenior: I'm not a yes man
18:36 , Arthur FerridgeLiam Rosenior insists he will play a manager role at Chelsea, rather than that of simply a head coach.
“We’ll see,” he said, when asked whether he can manage. “I wouldn’t be sat here if I did think I am [a manager], if I didn’t think I could deal with those things.
“Being a head coach, you talk about football systems and tactics. That’s ten per cent of the job. The job is to create spirit, energy, a culture. It doesn’t matter if you’re called a head coach, manager or anything else. The job is the same.
“My job is to have a team that runs, fights for each other, that plays with spirit and quality. That’s what I’m going to focus on.”
Charlton vs Chelsea head to head
18:28 , Arthur FerridgeThese two sides first faced one another in 1937. Chelsea won 3-0 that day, but would not beat the Addicks again for a decade.
Tonight’s will be the first meeting between Chelsea and Charlton since 2006-07, when the Blues did a league double over their London neighbours.
Those two wins came by a combined score of 3-1, with Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho, and Frank Lampard responsible for the goals.
Charlton wins: 23
Chelsea wins: 32
Draws: 16
Elsewhere in the FA Cup
18:20 , Arthur FerridgeThere has ben a wealth of other FA Cup action this afternoon - 18 matches to be exact!
Here’s what you might have missed in terms of Premier League involvement...
Holders Crystal Palace were dumped out of the competition by non-league Macclesfield in what is statistically the biggest cupset ever.
Fulham were slow off the mark at a chilly Craven Cottage but came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 3-1.
Merciless Man City unashamedly put ten goals past Exeter City of League One, with Antoine Semenyo scoring his first goal for the club just a few days after completing his transfer from Bournemouth.
Brentford recorded an uneventful 2-0 defeat of crisis-stricken Sheffield Wednesday.
And now, Tottenham are facing Aston Villa at home in a crunch all-Premier League match.
Of course, you can follow that LIVE with Standard Sport, with Sam Tabuteau at the ground bringing you expert insight and analysis.
Wait, how did we get here?
18:13 , Arthur FerridgeSuffice to say, it has been a hectic start to the year at Stamford Bridge.
It is rather the done thing to make grand changes to your life on New Year’s Day, and Enzo Maresca got in on the act in 2026, parting company with Chelsea after slipping results exacerbated his strained relationship with the club’s hierarchy.
The Blues moved quite quickly for Rosenior, appointing him formally on January 8.
Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane took on two matches as a caretaker manager while Ts were crossed and Is dotted, holding Man City to an impressive draw before losing to Fulham.
The day after the Fulham match, though, Rosenior took charge of his first training session.
The next day, he addressed the media for the first time.
And, the day after that, he heads across London to Charlton to head up his first match as Chelsea manager.
