Charlton keeper Dillon Phillips makes howler to gift Sunderland goal in playoff final

Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips made a Wembley howler for the ages as the Addicks faced Sunderland under the arch in the League One playoff final.

In just the fifth minute, disaster struck for Phillips and manager Lee Bowyer when an inexplicable error gifted the Black Cats the lead.

Under no pressure, Charlton defender Naby Sarr turned on the ball and passed it back to Phillips, a little to his right, but with the keeper having plenty of time to readjust.

However, Phillips completely misjudged the ball and let it roll by his foot and helplessly into the bottom corner in front of the stunned Addicks fans.

Bowyer fell to his knees on the touchline in disbelief at what he was witnessing as Charlton, who finished third in the League One table, made the worst possible start to the playoff final.

However, they did hit back before half-time with Ben Purrington tapping home from close range after an impressive cross from Lyle Taylor.

It was Purrington's first senior goal in his 120th appearance and it could not have come at a more crucial time for his side.

And the Charlton fans were sent into raptures when Patrick Bauer poked home from close range at the death to seal promotion back to the Championship.

Charlton booked their place at Wembley with victory over Doncaster in the semi-finals, but they needed penalties to see off the Yorkshire outfit who did not seal their place in the playoffs until the final day.

Sunderland, meanwhile, saw off Portsmouth 1-0 on aggregate thanks to Chris Maguire's strike in the first leg.
