Charlton Athletic win race to land Nottingham Forest 'target' as they trigger bargain buy-out clause

Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of Nottingham Forest summer 'target' Macauley Bonne.

The Leyton Orient striker, who scored 45 goals over the past two seasons, was linked with a host of Premier League and Championship clubs this summer following an impressive non-league campaign.

The 23-year-old even attracted international attention as he narrowly missed out on representing his nation, Zimbabwe, at this summer's African Cup of Nations after he failed to obtain a passport on time.

Bonne was first tipped for a City Ground move back in November, with the Reds under the watch of Spanish chief Aitor Karanka at the time.

Last month it was reported that, under Martin O'Neill, Forest had 'reignited their interest' and looked set to battle it out with Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough and Norwich City for the talent.

But now Championship new-boys Charlton have confirmed they have landed the striker on a three-year deal, having triggered a reported £200,000 release clause.

According to The Sun, Bonne's former club, Colchester United, will receive 30 percent of the fee.

“I’m delighted to be here now, it’s been something that’s been on the cards for a while now and so I’m delighted that it’s over the line," Bonne told Charlton's official website.

“Seeing how they’ve had a young team for the past two seasons and they’ve managed to get where they have with the youth in there. I thought it was the best move for me to progress and become a better player.”
