Charlton Athletic relegated from Championship after final day defeat at Leeds

Charlton Athletic have been relegated from the Championship after being well beaten by champions Leeds United at Elland Road on the final day of the season.

Lee Bowyer’s side earned promotion to the Championship with a dramatic League One play-off final win over Sunderland last season and initially took to the second tier like a duck to water, picking up four wins and two draws in an unbeaten start to the campaign.

However, off-field problems surrounding the club’s ownership and financial situation played backdrop to a decline in form and Bowyer’s men went 11 games without a win in the run up to Christmas.

During the coronavirus shutdown they were hit by the news that star striker Lyle Taylor would play no further part in their relegation fight because of concerns that an injury might cost him a move as a free agent this summer.

Despite that blow, they began with back-to-back victories against Hull and QPR, but had not won again since going into the final day.

However, Luton Town's win against Blackburn, coupled with Charlton's horror show at Leeds, mean the Addicks will be playing League One football next season.
