Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer's praise for Paul Smyth as loan spell comes to an end

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has praised Paul Smyth after the Northern Ireland international was recalled from his loan spell by Queens Park Rangers.

The 23-year-old former Linfield winger scored once in 14 games for the Addicks after joining the club in a temporary deal back in October.

Smyth now returns to QPR, who he joined from Linfield back in the summer of 2017.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer said: “Paul is an excellent lad, he has come in worked hard and made some important contributions for us.

"He has been a professional throughout his time here and given his all when he has played for us.

"We’d like to thank QPR for loaning him to us initially and wish him the best for the future.”

Bowyer had been keen to keep Smyth at The Valley.

Speaking earlier this week the Charlton boss had said:“Paul Smyth is QPR’s player.

“We don’t have a term where we can send him back. QPR, if they call him back, they call him back. That’s their decision.

"But Paul Smyth has been excellent around the place."

Smyth jumps from a promotion challenge to a relegation battle after returning to QPR.

He leaves Charlton sitting in sixth spot in League One, while QPR currently sit 18th in the EFL Championship.
