Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer's Marcus Maddison admission after Bolton Wanderers loan move

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has admitted that his 'gamble' on signing Marcus Maddison ultimately did not work out after the attacker's departure to Bolton Wanderers.

The 27-year-old moved to the Trotters on loan for the rest of the season on transfer deadline day.

Maddison joined the Addicks on a one-year deal over the summer, which has the option of a second.

But Maddison has had a limited impact at the Valley this season, playing only 10 games and scoring twice for the London side.

He has been described as a 'maverick' by his new boss Ian Evatt and the chairman of his old club Peterborough United, Darragh MacAnthony.

Bowyer admitted that he took a chance when signing Maddison over the summer and went against the advice of others who suggested he should go in a different direction.

But the Charlton boss admits the gamble did not pay off and suggested that Maddison did not meet the standards required at the Valley.

Speaking to London News Online, Bowyer said: “I took a gamble on Marcus – against a lot of people saying not to. I tried to improve his professionalism, if you like. But unfortunately it just hasn’t worked out.

“The one thing I do is I demand a certain standard and that goes throughout the whole team.

"The other thing I demand is that you have to be hungry and proud to play for this football club. So there were certain things that happened that weren’t right.

“No one person is bigger than the club – that includes myself. Players come and players go, managers come and go – that’s football.

“The most important thing for me is that the squad is happy and then you all have to be in this together. We win together and lose together, you can’t afford to carry anyone.”
