Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer gets touchline ban for Bristol City match with referee he branded a 'disgrace'

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has been handed a three-match touchline ban.

It means he will be forced to sit in the stands for the Addicks' trip to Bristol City next week, and he has also been served with a £4,000 fine.

The FA had charged Bowyer with improper conduct and/or questioning the integrity of a match official after Charlton's defeat to Swansea City earlier this month.

Speaking to London News Online, Bowyer admitted surprise at the ban, having contested it on Monday.

He said: "I’m surprised and disappointed with the ban. I didn’t shout or swear in my discussion with the referee but it is what it is.

"My focus remains making sure we are ready for Saturday’s game against Derby County."

The news comes after a controversial refereeing appointment was made for the game next week.

James Linington will take charge of the game, despite being roundly criticised for the decision to send off Leeds United's Gaetano Berardi against Millwall prior to the international break - a decision that was subsequently overturned.

Bowyer may have to be on his best behaviour with Linington, having previously landed himself in hot water last season by branding him a 'disgrace'.

The Charlton boss was handed a £1,000 last August after his side's defeat to Peterborough United that came via a controversial penalty.

He said to South London Press at the time: "We were the better team. I know that they did everything I asked. They competed, they left everything out there and I know that they’ve been cheated.

"There is no denying it. Everybody in the stadium saw it. It wasn’t a penalty, has never been a penalty. Now he is sitting in his little room over there and thinks it’s acceptable to make a decision and then he’ll go home and he’ll sleep alright. But I know I won’t, my players won’t and most of my fans won’t.

"Is it acceptable? No. Am I probably going to get into trouble? Yeah. But should he get in trouble? Yeah. He shouldn’t be reffing. He shouldn’t be able to ref the next game. He just made a decision there and said the fella got pushed. The fella tried to dive to head the ball. There was no push – they were side by side.

"A disgrace. And if I’m getting in trouble, he should get in trouble. It’s as simple as that because he’s just robbed us of a point, maybe three."
