Charlton Athletic and Leeds United issue statements after allegation of racial abuse towards former Bristol City loanee

Charlton Athletic have confirmed that an allegation of racial abuse towards Jonathan Leko was reported to referee John Brooks during Saturday's win over Leeds United.

The former Bristol City loanee is currently on loan at the Valley from West Brom, and is enjoying a more successful time than he did at the Robins two seasons ago, when he made 11 goalless appearances before being recalled by the Baggies.

He helped the Addicks record a shock win over Leeds on Saturday but was involved in an incident with Leeds keeper Kiko Casilla, which was subsequently reported to Brooks.

Brooks included the allegation in his referee's report, meaning it is now being investigated by the FA.

The Addicks have now issued a statement, confirming the allegation.

It said: "Charlton Athletic can confirm that an allegation of racial abuse directed at Jonathan Leko by an opposing player during Saturday’s game against Leeds United was reported to referee John Brooks.

"The Football Association are carrying out an investigation following the report.

"The club will support Leko throughout the process and will not be making any further comment until the investigation is concluded."

Leeds United themselves have issued a statement, which says they will work closely with the FA.

It said: "Leeds United are aware of an allegation made following our Sky Bet Championship game with Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Saturday.

"The club will be working with the FA during their investigation.

"We will be making no further comment at this stage."
