Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles says she’ll seek a third term

In a Thanksgiving Day video message, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced that she’ll seek reelection in 2022.

Lyles, a Democrat, was elected mayor in 2017, when she captured 59% of the vote. She won again in 2019 with 77% of the vote, according to the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections.

Prior to becoming mayor, Lyles served two terms on City Council as an at-large representative.

During Lyles’ terms as mayor, the city committed $50 million to tackle Charlotte’s affordable housing crisis, according to the city’s website. Charlotte also added more than 27,000 jobs during that time.

“I want you to know that I’m so proud of our community for all the good works that we’re doing – jobs and housing and so much more,” she said in the video.
