Charlotte Hawkins admits idea of daughter, 5, returning to school next week is 'really hard'

Charlotte Hawkins has admitted that she finds the prospect of her five-year-old daughter returning to school next week "really hard".

Yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that primary schools would be reopening on June 1.

The Prime Minister said reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils will be the first to go back during Sunday's coronavirus press conference.

Addressing the fact that her own child would be returning to school, GMB presenter Charlotte revealed that she had discussed the situation with her daughter Ella.

She explained: "My daughter's going back next week and I've had to explain to her, 'You're not going to be necessarily with all your friends, you'll be in a group of 15 and you can't go and see the others even if you want to.' She said, 'I'll wave from a distance'.

"But it's really hard - you put them in a room together, they haven't seen their friends in two months."

Co-star Ben Shephard quipped: "You know what we're like - a nightmare!"

"Two meters away at all times, obviously," Charlotte added.

Despite acknowledging that some schools will not be able to reopen on June 1, Mr Johnson argued it was crucial for children to return to the classroom.

However the plans face serious opposition, with councils in Liverpool, Hartlepool, Birmingham, Solihull and Essex all previously saying the June 1 date may not be possible.

Mr Johnson said: "Today, I can announce it is our intention to go ahead with that as planned on June 1, a week on Monday.

"We then intend from June 15 for secondary schools to provide some contact for year 10 and year 12 students to help them to prepare for exams next year, with up to a quarter of these students in at any point."
