Charlotte Church to report Twitter abuse to police after tweeting thoughts on Nigel Farage's resignation

Charlotte Church has expressed her shock at the “horrifying” abuse she received on social media after tweeting about Nigel Farage’s resignation.

On Monday, Mr Farage announced his decision to step down as the leader of Ukip just weeks after Britain voted to leave the European union, a cause he ultimately devoted his political career to. In his announcement, the 52-year-old said that, being as though his goal has now been achieved, he “wants [his] life back”.

After the shock decision, Miss Church – a staunch supporter of the Remain campaign – wrote a tweet where she said: “I want my f*****g European Union back” before using an expletive to describe Mr Farage.

The 30-year-old has spoken about receiving abuse on social media before, however on Monday, said she was shocked “at the level of and type of abuse” she had received.

She then wrote a message on Facebook where she said she may have been wrong to use the language she did in her initial tweet "but the messages of abuse and threats I'm getting on here are horrifying". She also said she would be reporting those messages to the police.

“The messages of abuse and threats I’m getting on here are horrifying,” she wrote. “I will be reporting them to the police. I understand many of us have different opinions on this but let's try and stem this swell of hate.”

The singer also re-tweeted a series of misogynistic message she had received over the course of 24 hours.
