Charlize Theron says playing Megyn Kelly in Bombshell was 'harder' than portraying serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster

Charlize Theron has said that playing Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly was even more difficult than playing serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the movie Monster.

Theron starred as Wuornos in the 2003 movie, where she ultimately won an Oscar for portraying the female murderer.

Theron, 44, said, “This was harder,” when she compared filming both movies after a screening of Bombshell on Sunday in New York.

“She’s incredibly well known. I’ve never played anybody on that level. I’ve played real people that nobody knows about so there was less pressure when I did those,” she explained.

The South Africa born actress and producer went on to say that she originally didn’t think she could do justice to the role.

“Maybe there’s somebody out there who can do this better than you can,” she says she thought at the time. “But I was just really scared too. I honestly knew her so superficially.”

The actress previously spoke to Variety at the SXSW premiere of her movie Long Shot about Bombshell, saying, “I think for a lot of people, they didn’t understand why she just didn’t speak up. She was in a complicated place, and as a human being, I have empathy for that. And I don’t think a lot of people truly understood that.”

Theron stars alongside Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, Mark Duplass and Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon, with Fox News CEO Roger Ailes played by John Lithgow.

The first trailer premiered in August. The movie is going to focus on a sexual harassment scandal that rocked the Fox News media empire, and came to a head in 2016.
