After discussing her fractious relationship with Tom Hardy in a recent interview, Charlize Theron has admitted she also shared some tense moments with Tobey Maguire while shooting one of her early films.
Hardy and Theron's time together on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road famously culminated in Hardy presenting Theron with a self-portrait and a note reading: “You are an absolute nightmare, BUT you are also f***ing awesome. I'll kind of miss you. Love, Tommy.”
The actress was interviewed by James Franco for the V Magazine’s Fashion and Film issue, in a conversation apparently considering why “beauty is sometimes a thing to overcome”.
Once Franco had finished reminiscing about Theron’s turn as an “eye-popping, blond Amazonian sex queen in lingerie” and highlighting her attractiveness (“the most beautiful woman in film”), the actor delved quickly into long-running rumours of a rift with Maguire. The pair played lovers in the 1999 film The Cider House Rules.
“Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah,” replied Theron. “I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie.
“Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time. I love Tobey. I’m kind of glad we had that experience on that movie. It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else."
Theron said an issue was the number of scenes requiring two actors who have no romantic feelings towards each other to get intimate.
“We had some really intimate moments. Tobey and I didn’t feel that way about each other, so I had to figure something else out.”
Whether she received a similar present from Maguire remains unknown.
