Charlie Wyke joins Wigan as Celtic miss out on striker deal after Sunderland exit

Charlie Wyke has joined Wigan after leaving Sunderland, despite interest from Celtic in the frontman.

The striker decided to quit the Stadium of Light and was believed to be a target for Ange Postecoglou after the Aussie joined the club this summer.

But he has decided to stay in England with regular first team football on offer at Wigan and he's signed for the Latics as they look to get promoted from League One.

It's a surprising move from the 28-year-old who was believed to be looking to make the step up from that division with Championship clubs also interested.

But Wigan have confirmed his signing this morning as they look to build a team to compete at the top end of the table and return to the Championship.

Nottingham Forest were another team interested in signing him but it had been believed that he would make the move to Celtic Park to challenge for trophies and European football.

Wigan have swooped in and got the deal done though, despite reports in England that he was to hold more talks with Celtic ahead of the new campaign.

The Hoops had been looking to get another striker in with Odsonne Edouard's future in doubt and Leigh Griffiths and Albian Ajeti both struggling for form.
