Charlie Wyke is excited about a potential Sunderland strike partnership with Kyle Lafferty

Charlie Wyke believes he and Kyle Lafferty can form a good partnership up front for Sunderland, if and when manager Phil Parkinson decides to field them both together.

Parkinson recently teased potentially starting a game with the two target men, but Lafferty has had to make do with coming on from the bench since his arrival at Sunderland in January.

With Wyke netting just three goals in 2020 though, there have been some calls for Lafferty to displace him in the side, but Wyke believes there's no reason they can't play together, with a slight tactical tweak, just as we've seen Parkinson do during games to positive effect.

Wyke said on a potential partnership: "Hopefully - hopefully he's not playing ahead of me!

"He's obviously come on a few times and we are chasing a game then, so it's hard for him.

"But when he has come on he's been bright and there's a lot to look forward to."

Sunderland fans and players applaud at Coventry

Parkinson recently spoke highly of Lafferty, despite his lack of game-time thus far.

The Sunderland boss was keen to point out how hard the Northern Ireland international was working behind the scenes, and how his arrival had prompted rivals, Wyke in particular, to raise their games.

Wyke was in agreement with that assessment. He said: "He's a good player, he's had a good career and he's a good addition to the squad.

"He's a good lad and he's got along with everyone straight away. I know he probably hasn't had as much game time as he would have wanted, but I can see he's ready for his chance and he's going to be a good player for us."

Wyke was speaking at the Beacon of Light for a Foundation of Light event highlighting vital work from clubs that goes on in communities to tackle some of the biggest issues in society, covering health, sport, education and participation.
