Charlie Webster has been discharged from hospital six weeks after contracting a rare strain of malaria and being put on life support.
The former Sky Sports News presenter who hosted ITV's Tour Series cycling race earlier this year became unwell on 6 August after watching the Olympic opening ceremony.
The 33-year-old was admitted to hospital where doctors initially thought she was dehydrated after completing her six-week 'Ride to Rio' challenge.
Webster was put on life support and dialysis when her kidneys began to fail. She was eventually brought out of her medically induced coma and continued her recovery in the UK.
A spokesperson for Webster said she will continue to receive treatment at St James’s Hospital, in Leeds, as an outpatient.
In a statement, Webster thanked the NHS and the medical team in charge of her care.
“The doctors, nurses, tropical diseases team – they’ve talked me through everything that has happened to me and really helped me to understand the seriousness of what I’ve been through and how hard my body has fought.
“I’m thrilled to be discharged to continue my recovery. After almost six weeks in isolation in hospital, I’m really looking forward to the little things, like being able to sit in the fresh air, with a cup of tea!’
