Charlie Watts is being widely reported to have been president of a small Welsh group - but they know nothing about it

He was known and loved all around the world for decades as the backbone of The Rolling Stones.

But drummer Charlie Watts had a lesser known claim to fame - he was once president of the North Wales Sheepdog Society - at least that's what was widely reported in the press yesterday after the death of the 80-year-old rocker was announced.

Yet the people who run the 300-strong group, billed as "home to an enthusiastic sheepdog trialling community since 1930" say the London-born musician had no connection with them at all.

"No, nothing to do with us - it's baffling," said the society's secretary Martin Davidsson, from the middle of a dew-soaked field on Anglesey.

"I got up this morning to all these enquiries from various places asking what our link is with The Rolling Stones - I've had to go out into the field to return their calls because it's the only place I can get a decent reception.

"Where that information has come from I have no idea because I've asked around quite a few of our membership - many of whom are even older than Charlie Watts - and none of them have a clue. A couple of them weren't even sure who The Rolling Stones are."

The 66-year-old added that the rumour may have started back when the band visited North Wales during their early days - they famously played the Royal Lido in Prestatyn in '63.

"I can't think how it could've come about otherwise," added Martin.

"It's not like there's anything online about Charlie having been a lover of sheepdogs or anything."

Watts' death was announced yesterday afternoon, his publicist Bernard Doherty saying: "It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.

"Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time."

Earlier this month, it was also announced that Watts was to miss the Stones' forthcoming US tour in order to recover from an unspecified medical procedure.
