Charlie Nicholas makes Celtic and Rangers title call as he insists season MUST be completed

Former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas doesn't think it would be fair to give his old side the title before the season has been completed.

Manager Neil Lennon has declared that his men should be anointed Premiership champions if the 2019-20 season is called to a premature halt.

Rangers have taken the opposite view, insisting that the season should be declared null and void, but Nicholas feels it's too early to be making those kind of decisions.

He wrote in his Daily Express column: "I don't see why we have to make any knee-jerk moves such as closing the leagues down, or declaring that Celtic are champions or that Hearts are relegated and Dundee United are promoted from the Championship.

"How unfair would that be to the many teams in the SPFL divisions who still have the opportunity to save themselves or challenge at the other end?"

However, the former Parkhead icon did acknowledge that his old club will lift the title eventually.

"If the season does resume, Celtic will win the title anyway. I cannot see Steven Gerrard's team clawing back the 13-point deficit.

"I don't think it matters when Celtic win the league, just as long as they do.

"It could be done and dusted within three or four weeks of the campaign continuing.

"If all fixtures are fulfilled then there can be no dubiety or questions lingering over titles, relegation and promotion, European qualification and the awarding of silverware at the end of the campaign."
