Charlie Nicholas makes Borna Barisic Rangers transfer claim as Roma weigh up move for star

Charlie Nicholas insists Rangers will be "ready to cash in" on Borna Barisic if a big offer arrives from Roma this month.

The Italian giants are keen to bring the Croatian international to Serie A as an alternative to Aleksandar Kolarov, with Gers manager Steven Gerrard confirming their interest.

The Rangers hierarchy are keen to tie the defender to a new contract, but Nicholas believes he doesn't have the same 'not for sale' status as Alfredo Morelos.

The former Celtic star wrote in his Daily Express column: "If a big-money bid comes in for Borna Barisic then Rangers will be ready to cash in.

"Steven Gerrard has already said he is attracting interest from Roma.

"I can see that. I know the Italians were in for Sead Kolasinac from Arsenal and that was killed off by Kieran Tierney’s injury.

"So they are looking for a left-back and I can see why Barisic would be on their radar.

"He is a Croatian international and is likely to play at Euro 2020, and he has also done well with Rangers in the Europa League.

"Rangers have already said they won’t sell Alfredo Morelos so if they need to raise money then they might look at others like Glen Kamara or Barisic.

"Barisic is also a sale that Rangers could accommodate.  I know they don’t have a current replacement but Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson will already be looking at replacements that will be a lot cheaper or even loans.

"Yes, Barisic has improved and got better but he is not irreplaceable.

"His set-plays have been good, especially at Celtic Park, but he is someone Rangers can sell and bring someone else in and maybe generate some funds for the manager to go and strengthen again.

"Gerrard signed him from Osijek for around £2 million so if they could sell Barisic for £7 or £8million it wouldn’t be a bad return."
