Charlie Nicholas in Steven Gerrard Rangers exit theory as he delivers 'guilty' verdict on Ibrox boss

Charlie Nicholas believes Steven Gerrard could well walk away from Rangers - but not yet.

The pundit and former Celtic striker can't see the Ibrox boss quitting before the end of the season, especially while his team remain in the Europa League.

A Scottish Cup quarter-final exit to Hearts left Gerrard considering his future as he faces the prospect of a second season without silverware.

Nicholas insists the former Liverpool captain has been guilty of failing to ensure his team learn from their mistakes, having twice crashed and burned after the winter break.

He told The Express: "Steven Gerrard won't walk away from Rangers now - but I could see him quitting in the summer.

"Gerrard said he would consider his future in the wake of last weekend's Scottish Cup quarter-final exit at Hearts.

"But Rangers have a Europa League last 16 clash with Bayer Leverkusen to look forward to this month and he has too much to lose from leaving Rangers two months before the season ends and having nowhere else to go.

"Gerrard is determined to build up his reputation as a top coach. He wants to show he can improve teams and turn them into winners. He did it as a player and I believe he will do it as a manager.

"Whether that happens in Scotland remains to be seen.

"Gerrard would only quit Ibrox for England if it was a club of some significance. It would need to be a Premier League job - I can't see him leaving for, say, Derby County."

Nicholas has urged Gerrard to show Alfredo Morelos the door this summer but wants him to stick with Ryan Kent.

He reckons Gerrard cannot grumble with the financial backing he's been given and insists blame for the manner of his team's collapse must lie at the manager's door.

Nicholas added: "Alfredo Morelos has been a constant pain in the butt to the management and his team-mates. They've hung on to him for too long.

"Morelo let down Gerrard against last week, his late return from Colombia resulting in the striker being axed from the Tynecastle cup squad. He should be the first player to be shown the door this summer.

"Ryan Kent hasn't lived up to his £7million price tag but Gerrard could make him better and sell him for a lot more.

"The manager has spent a few bob when Rangers could barely afford it and he has to to get to the root of why his side crashed at the same point of the season that they did last year.

"That responsibility is Gerrard's. That is where he is guilty of failure. I don't think he can deny it."
